"Did HBO's 'True Blood' Campaign Achieve Immortality" - Fast Company
June/17/09 00:19 Filed in: Off-Site
--- Sunday night played host to an anxiously-awaited television event on our newly all-digital TV signals (and we're not talking about the Lakers' victory). It was the premiere of the second season of True Blood, the vampiric HBO show that first catapulted into our collective consciousness with a series of extremely effective viral ads that had all of us doing double-takes when we caught our first glimpse of ads for the TruBlood energy drink. Viewership skyrocketed during the first season, so HBO was faced with the challenge to top the faux-blood beverage for Season Two. Did they? ---

True Blood Viral Marketing Site BloodCopy + Gawker = Controversy
June/04/09 15:08 Filed in: Promotion
BloodCopy - One of the original Tru(e) Blood viral marketing sites, that wound down last fall, recently came back to un-life with new content in promotion of season 2. Among the promotional efforts was a cross-site promotion where posts from BloodCopy would appear on blog site “Gawker”:
/ They’ll be set off by a border and labeled as BloodCopy posts but otherwise indistinguishable from editorial content — except that the blog is written by an undead, bloodsucking ghoul.
“With vampires, we thought we could be a little looser with the disclosure and create some disbelief,” Chris Batty, Gawker’s vice president of sales and marketing, told me yesterday, dismissing critics of the advertorial as “humorless.” He also made a bold prediction that surprised me so much I made sure to confirm I’d heard correctly: “If we’re around in three or four years,” Batty said, “the majority of our advertising revenue will be in sponsored posts like this.” /
http://www.niemanlab.org/2009/05/gawker-vp-says-sponsored-posts-will-bring-in-majority-of-revenue-one-day/
It seems that some individuals complained of the blurring between blogging and advertisements but, more curiously, some outlets actually took the BloodCopy posts as real news!
/ "Gawker the editorial staff and Gawker the advertising staff don't tell each other much about what they're doing," Snyder explained. "The way the media economic engine works is that the eyeballs attracted by editorial can be sold by advertising in order to pay for the editorial. It's a nice little symbiotic circle, but the key ingredient for keeping it running is to keep a bright line between the ads and edit. And clearly that wasn't the case here."
"[We have] been taken to the media criticism woodshed over this one," he continued. "What's advertising should be called advertising and what's edit should be called edit. It hurts both to blur the distinction." The "announcement" was since taken down, although some websites have kept archive copies.
Gawker's vice president for sales and marketing, Chris Batty, respected the opinions regarding the tie-up, but reiterated that they have done this before--in their early years, he mentioned, they had tie-ups with Nike and New Line to promote their products through clearly-marked blog entries, which he believes would have a bigger impact than traditional ads. "A lot of time has passed and a lot of people who write for us don't remember how we used to pay the bills here," he said. He's surprised, however, that more people "took this at face value." /

Campfire Sinks Its Creative Teeth Into True Blood - Creativity
August/05/08 23:32 Filed in: Off-Site
Jeff Beer of Creativity-online.com has posted an article covering the impressive, and continually expanding, True Blood promotional efforts created by the advertising company Campfire.
“Zach Enterlin, HBO's vice president of advertising and promotion says when Ball issued the marketing challenge to immerse viewers into the world of True Blood before the first episode even aired, Campfire immediately came to mind. "I'd read a lot about some of the campaigns they had done over the past few years, most notably with Audi," he says. "When True Blood came about we thought it would be a great opportunity to flesh out this world further and deliver a really immersive experience. And I think that's Campfire's strong suit, the notion of storytelling through promotional content."
...
What makes the campaign behind True Blood intriguing is how it overlaps and embeds itself within the mythology of the show itself. To set the stage for the show's hemoglobin-heavy adventures in northern Louisiana, Campfire had to create a complex back story that would reveal how vampires have revealed their presence to the rest of the world, due in large part to the existence of a synthetic blood product manufactured by a mysterious Japanese company.”

July/31/08 03:42 Filed in: Photos
As of July 30th, it appears Louisiana has it’s very own vampire-friendly bar & nightclub called “FANGTASIA”. The proprietor’s names are Pam and Eric and sources are reporting they are, indeed, vampires themselves. Courtesy of BloodCopy, we have a photo of their promotional flyer in our Photo Gallery along with a photo of Fangtasia itself. If you happen to be in the Shreveport/Bon Temps area then you may want to find the location of this bar and stop by for a drink! This bar is featured in HBO’s upcoming True Blood TV Show.

The fight over the “Vampire Rights Amendment” is heating up! In conjunction with the pro-vampire American Vampire League and anti-vampire Fellowship Of The Sun websites, posters are now appearing in major cities supporting each stance. The AVL posters remind us that “Vampires Were People Too” while FOTS warns us that “Vampires Are Immoral”. Which side are you on?

Ad Campain For HBO's True Blood Confuses Consumers - ew.com
July/24/08 03:26 Filed in: Off-Site
Lynette Rice at hollywoodinsider.ew.com has posted a brief article on the confusion among mainstream consumers due to HBO’s clever “Tru Blood” viral marketing. I myself continue to receive inquires on where the product can be purchased on a weekly basis:
“HBO’s inventive campaign to drum up interest for True Blood, the vampire series from Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball that debuts Sept. 7, may be a little too high concept for the average mortal. Outdoor ads and vending machines that tout a bottled drink called Tru Blood have driven consumers to the network website, where they’ve futilely tried to buy the product or locate a dealer.”

HBO Invites Vampire Fans To Savor "True Blood" - Advertising Age
July/18/08 16:55 Filed in: Off-Site
The Website Advertising Age has a new article covering HBO’s ever expanding promotion for True Blood. We’ve seen an expansive viral marketing campaign for the in-story Tru Blood beverage, along with ads for vampire friendly dating services and lawyers. Over the next few weeks it seems that HBO and Campfire will be continuing with the viral marketing but, also, offering more mainstream advertisements:
“Coming next: a mock public-service campaign supporting both sides of a "Vampire Rights Amendment" debate, with microsites for two different advocacy groups involved in the fray: the American Vampire League and the Fellowship of the Sun. A faux newsmagazine, "In Focus," covering the vampire story, will run on HBO and HBO on Demand. At the annual Comic-Con in San Diego, a large gathering of fans of comics and sci-fi, HBO will be distributing comic books that recap story elements, have Tru Blood sponsor a masquerade costume ball and seek signatures for both the Vampire League and the Fellowship.
The effort grows less subtle as the summer wears on: Traditional tune-in spots start to run July 27, as well as a "True Blood" website with episode guides and more. An online comic book debuts July 30, and will have two pages debut per week for eight weeks. Finally, when the series premieres Sept. 7, HBO.com will offer such things as a "True Blood" wiki, where fans and vampire enthusiasts can update and edit the bloodsuckers' mythology.”

The Vampires Are Coming... After Months Of Warning - NYTimes
July/16/08 17:16 Filed in: Off-Site
Douglas Quenqua of The New York Times has posted a rather detailed article covering the creation of HBO’s exceedingly clever and continually expansive marketing efforts for True Blood.
“The campaign for the show, “True Blood,” based on a series of vampire books by Charlaine Harris, is shaping up to be the most extensive that HBO has ever undertaken.
By the time the program begins, the promotional effort will be four months old, having required the full-time attention of six Campfire employees who are monitoring message boards, maintaining a fake blog and coordinating the precisely timed release of new materials. In addition, 20 freelancers are working on other technical aspects of the campaign. HBO and Campfire began plotting the effort in February.”

HBO Broadcasts Tru Blood Beverage Commercial
July/04/08 22:39 Filed in: Promotion
I was watching the “John Adams” marathon on HBO this evening and between episodes they were airing what appeared to be a beer commercial, oddly enough. There were three guys sitting around a campfire, enjoying their beer, and out jumps a vampire asking for something to drink. A friend it turns out, they hand him a Tru Blood beverage.

It then goes on to advertise the http://trubeverage.com site.

Tru Blood Marketing Campaign - Online
July/01/08 04:15 Filed in: Promotion
In connection with the Tru Blood mailings that have been sent out (as mentioned in the previous News entry), several websites have come to light.
The main site, at the moment, seems to be http://bloodcopy.com/. This is a blog site that purports to cover vampires news around the world, including their “coming out of the coffin” and the importance of “Tru Blood” (a synthetic blood nourishment beverage) to their open integration within mortal society. To quote “With the advent of Tru Blood, a synthetic blood substitute, vampires have decided to announce their presence and exist among us openly. This website chronicles the amazing days we live in as vampires attempt to integrate with humans.”
As well, “Tru Blood” itself has it’s own advertisement site at http://trubeverage.com/ which includes information on the fictional product line, a section of extras (including wallpapers downloads and more), and an online shop where yoiu can purchase “Tru Blood” branded merchandise (such as clothing and drinking glasses).
In addition to the above, there are or have been numerous satellite sites.
http://www.chishio.jp/ - The site of the Japanese ‘creators’ of “Tru Blood”. This link is now redirecting to http://bloodcopy.com/.
http://www.revenantones.com/ - A forum where vampires around the world discussed issues surrounding their “coming out of the coffin”. This link now, also, is redirecting to http://bloodcopy.com/.
http://www.youtube.com/user/BloodCopyCom - A frequently updated YouTube profile containing various videos related to the http://bloodcopy.com/ site, including a “Tru Blood vs Human” vampire taste test.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=389839563 - MySpace profile of a person going under the handle "Blood" and listing himself as 28 years old and living in Shreveport, Louisiana has begun uploading videos to his profile (duplicating some of the videos seen on the above YouTube profile).
If you have found others, please let me know or post about them in our forum.
